Ted Roberts was born in 1941, in Cheltenham in England. After he left school, he went on to spend four years studying painting, sculpture and design at the then Gloucestershire College of Art where he completed his degree in Fine Arts. He then completed a year’s teacher training in 1962 and went on to teach art at Michael Hall School in Sussex, where he taught art to both pupils and adults. He also went on to gives lectures and teach art in New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and the USA.
He painted and exhibited throughout his long career in teaching, his work as an artist was an essential part of this. He believed strongly that in order to inspire his students, he also needed to have the lived experience of working as an artist.
Major influences on his development as a painter can be traced to 20th Century movements, such as Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism. Colour has always dominated his work, and he described himself as a colourist first and foremost, believing strongly that colour forms a language and is the basis for shared experience. Some of his paintings record the light and experiences of the south of France, whilst others sprang directly from his imagination and memories, forming an interplay between places seen, and his imagination. His paintings emerged freely, which lent a spontaneity to his work. His paintings adorn walls all around the world, and he leaves a legacy of vibrancy and colour.
